And this is why I don’t associate myself with the Touhou fandom at large! (Among other reasons.)

It actually was /jp/ once. There was a whole thread about my ask blog being “wrong” because Reisen said it was okay to play on easy.

Which, I should mention, was done precisely to subvert expectations (in addition to being my personal opinion, but that matters little).

Oh, there’s another reason! Because half the people in the fandom have a massive elitism streak about 1CC ALL THE GAMES LUNATIC MODE IF YOU PLAY ON EASY GET THE FUCK OUT and frankly, it’s annoying as hell.

What the hell does a fandom get out of excluding people, anyway?

I am not sure to what extent it’s difficulty-related elitism and not “how DARE him not characterize this character in the same fashion IOSYS does?”

Given the proportion of the fandom that doesn’t actually play the games, I’m inclined towards Leo’s take on this.

As far as what it gets out of excluding people: the “exclusion” is more or less for its own sake, for the purpose of separating the ingroup from the outgroup — the “people like me” from the “people not like me,” the “Us” from the “Them,” in other words. Exclusivity says, “Ha, see? We’re better than all these other people, who aren’t qualified/true/real/cool like we are!” I’m not even coming up with this myself, this is an actual sociological thing.

This is why I stay the fuck out of fandoms and just stick with my friends and doing stuff I like. (But then, I’m kind of doing the same thing, by shuffling “fandoms” into the category of “Them” …)
